Venera Kazarova
Blooming Creativity in my Head
Video art
... pays tribute to Rima Day's and Venera Kazarova's take on costume design and performance as a mix of art and reality through which to explore the seemingly malleable boundaries between physical form and perception.
Rima Day uses thread, fabric and paper to create artwork that is inspired by nature and the human body. Even though her background is fashion and costuming, she adapted her skill and knowledge in garment construction into a language to express herself through art.
She studied fashion design both in her native city of Tokyo, Japan and later in New York City and worked as a freelance custom ballet costumer in New York City and Connecticut.
Her fabric books are in collection at the University of Iowa, Yale University, University of California, Princeton University, Southern Methodist University, other colleges and libraries and as well as several private collections. She lives near Nashville, TN.
While working at the costume shop in Vanderbilt University, I started making 18th century dresses with used jeans as a part of upcycling projects. They were exhibited in several galleries and I realized that it is possible for me to use my sewing skills to create art instead of costumes. I started exploring the possibilities.
I am currently investigating the idea that needle and thread for me is the same as pen and ink for a writer.
Venera Kazarova works at the intersection of visual and performative art. Initially she is a costume designer and received formal education in this field, her artistic way started with experimenting with materials and shape, and then completely went beyond the costume itself.
Instead of creating an outfit with practical meaning for real-life wear, she is pushing the boundaries &
approaches her craft by viewing costumes as a means of artistic expression.
Focuses on creating designs that convey messages and ideas, I use them as concepts in my costume-centric interdisciplinary performances. Yet, performances even though a mixture of Art & Reality, clearly show that art is not able to solve the fundamental problems of humanity. Of course, it's essential to recognize the multifaceted impact of art on society, art has the power to provoke, challenge norms & ignite conversations, all of which contribute to collective understanding of the world's issues. Artists often serve as witnesses of society, capturing the human experience & reflecting it back in various to us forms, their work can provide a platform for dialogue, empathy & introspection.
Yet, despite all this, the outfits I create choose to treat costumes as a form of artistic medium, similar to songs, poems, or novels. Each design is a reflection of my inner world & the external influences I encounter. By blending elements of reality & fantasy, as well as drawing inspiration from nature I create a visual language that allows me to convey emotions & stories without relying on words.

PRESS RELEASE
Exhibition view: Rima Day and Venera Kazarova Red Gasps, OXH Gallery Tampa, 2024.
OXH GALLERY is pleased to present Red Gasps featuring US-based Japan-born textile artist Rima Day in conversation with Moscow-born, Berlin-dwelling performance artist Venera Kazarova.
The two-part exhibition will be on view September 19, 2024 through November 14, 2024, with new artwork by both artists debuting October 17, 2024 and opening reception Thursday, September 19, 6-9pm.
Dedicated to work with artists whose practices, complimentary in their conceptual rigor and artistic sensibilities, provide opportunities for communion around art not as a form of escapism or a sentimental gesture but as an opportunity to ensure that engagement with beauty and meaning can endure far beyond the gallery walls, OXH Gallery is pleased to announce RED GASPS, a two-person show by international women artists Rima Day and Venera Kazarova, both coming from the world of fashion & costuming and intentional about adapting their skill and knowledge in garment construction into a language to express themselves through art that is not only adorned in poetry but also intentional about the many facets of observation and understanding, including movement, color and metaphor thus granting viewers the chance to explore for themselves the seemingly malleable boundaries between physical form and perception.
The gallery room, a blinding white space devoid of coordinates - white walls, white ceiling, white floor - invites the viewer to step inside and take in the stream of emotions rising and ebbing like poetry in motion as one “red spillage” bounces against the other without any other point of reference but the synergy of Kazarova’s videos pulsating vigorously on multiple screens and Day’s bounded books carrying between the covers not only the artist’s own “heart threads” but hopefully those of the audience as well.
