Tampa currently stands as one of the leading regions for real estate development in the US. Diverging from the conventional focus on tourism and maritime industries, the city has also positioned itself as a hub for innovation and technology, attracting major corporations underscoring Tampa’s proactive embrace of diverse and impactful leadership. As Tampa continues to shape a forward-thinking economic landscape, to ascend to the status of a top-tier city, however, it must prioritize and invest in aspects such as quality of life, culture, art, and community for the long-term benefit of the city's increasingly diverse population.
Recognizing the cultural amenities gap, I established OXH Gallery in late 2023. Through its successful programing which has brought established national and international artists to Tampa, the gallery aims not only to redefine artistic exploration beyond the conventional white cube paradigm, but to also evolve into a hub for culture and community with lasting ramifications for the City of Tampa.
In addition to establishing a cross-generational approach to exhibiting and promoting art and artists across a diverse range of disciplines and mediums, OXH Gallery is set up to be a center of culture and community where artists, musicians, poets, writers, dancers, and culture workers come together with those who seek to stretch their imagination through art that engages the mind, the eye, and the soul not as a nod to l’art pour l’art but in order to bring people together and ultimately celebrate what makes us all human by connecting, as Alain De Botton would say, “the spirit of the artworks with the psychological frailties and spiritual needs of the audience”.
Using my initials to name the gallery was important because I want to keep seeing greater diversity and more women-founded and -run businesses in the arts. By including my name, I speak to my intention and determination to carve out my own space in the industry and the city of Tampa community. Furthermore, having my name in the business sparks the mindset shift necessary to step into the role of the founder and gallery director. This business is mine, so I own it - literally, with my name.
While recognizant of the dominant trends in looking at art through technical, political, historical, and shock-value reading perspectives, OXH Gallery is committed to focus on art and artists whose visual tools engage the mind, the eye, and the soul alike in order to bring people together, help them remember what, deep down, they know is true, put language to something for which there is no language available and ultimately, celebrate what makes us all human.
In this regard, OXH Gallery is dedicated to work with artists whose practices, complimentary in their conceptual rigor and artistic sensibilities, provide opportunities for communion around art not as a form of escapism or a sentimental gesture but as an opportunity to ensure that engagement with beauty and meaning can endure far beyond the gallery walls.
OXH Gallery works with a diverse group of under-represented, emerging and established artists from around the world. We are passionate about discovering new talent and supporting the careers of our artists, and we work closely with them to develop their work and create opportunities for them to showcase their art. As an artist-owned and operated art space, OXH Gallery is not looking to compete to sign artists to a permanent roster or otherwise conflict with shows, fairs and other gallery relationships they may have. Rather, it aims to offer community, professional opportunities, and connections through a strong curatorial program, exposure to museum acquisition teams, critics, collectors, special events, artist talks, innovative marketing, scholarly catalogs and group exhibitions which seek to provide a space for open exchange of ideas and the development of complex and nuances artistic approaches.
