“The Estonian artist Angelika Kollin uses photography, performance, and portraiture in her delicate evocation of the mysteries of human connection and loss. She travels out against the tide of time from grieving and death foreshadowed back to the child’s first recognition that while we are separate from the world, we can feel connected to another and in that connection find the very worth of being”.
Alasdair Foster

As humans we seek connections through a deep-seated yearning to create or belong to loving and nurturing environments. As we gradually evolve on our life journey, this profound longing extends beyond the family unit, becoming a passage inherent to our humanity. Discovering wholeness occurs as we recognize our innate oneness and sameness. Ultimately, every person pursues the same goals – to love, be loved, and lead a purpose-filled life. Throughout our life every person we encounter, every moment we breathe through, extends an open invitation for our hearts to expand. It might feel daunting more often than not, yet our existence falters without following our heart's longing for real connection; we wander aimlessly through the external world without our willingness to embrace vulnerability. We imprison ourselves away from true intimacy if we don't venture beyond the confines of our body and the familiar bounds of our comfort zone.
“THE ETERNAL PASSAGE- an end, a beginning” are series of portraits that intimately explore the symbiotic and intimate relationship between women and the natural world - a connection that unfolds organically and instinctively. Much like Ariadne's thread guiding her through the labyrinth, women, guided by their intuition, seamlessly intertwine themselves into the fabric of the natural world around them and readily plunge into the pilgrimage of self-discovery. Within this harmonious union, they immerse in the mysteries of the natural realm. It’s a journey that transcends the surface, where the interplay of intuition and nature unveils the key to the rhythm of life and a woman’s being.

PRESS RELEASE
Exhibition view: Angelika Kollin, The Eternal Passage (an end, a beginning), OXH Gallery Tampa, 2024
In celebration of Women’s History Month, OXH Gallery is pleased to announce The Eternal Passage (an end, a beginning), Angelika Kollin’s fist solo exhibition with the gallery in the landmark Kress Building. Given the gallery’s intention to celebrate what makes us who we truly are - fragile, searching beings daring to dream and refuse to let hope vanish as we explore our shared humanity - multi-awarded photographer Angelika Kollin’s series of portraits that intimately explore the symbiotic relationship between women and the natural world becomes the perfect vessel to reflect, in her words “the journey that transcends the surface, where the interplay of intuition and nature unveils the key to the rhythm of life and a woman’s readiness to plunge into the pilgrimage of self-discovery”.
Although widely acclaimed for her ongoing project Mary’s Children, Angelika Kollin takes over the gallery with medium-scale works that are not based on a particular series but rather share a common concern with the difficulty that women have taking up space against a persistent attitude of resistance when they do not conform to societal expectations or are looked at in a particular gendered or raced way.
Trying to make visible the experience of being in a female body by diving deep under the surface of both subject and subject matter, Angelika’s carefully observed compositions offer a multiplicity of readings thus visually shaping the conversation around inclusivity and body representation toward what Lauren Elkin in Art Monsters: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art (2023) defines as “an art of tactility, that restores touch to the aesthetic” while conceptually urging us to be present and pay attention in the face of shifting social baselines by calling forth the importance of women being able to talk about and show their bodies without being made to feel like they’re being inappropriate or excessive. Eternally on the brink of change, the women are captured in moments of deep transition as a reminder to self: “You are not powerless in the face of change. You can mourn what you had or cherish it - the choice is yours”.
Kollin’s work has received accolades such as winner in the Professional Series category of the 22nd Julia Margaret Cameron Award (2024), BartTur Photo Award Founders Choice (2023), the Best in Competition from FMoPA(2023), 1st prize winner (2020) and finalist (2022) from Lensculture, 1st Place from BIFA (2021), finalist from Lucie Foundation (2020), among others. Her work has been published in renowned outlets, including CNN, The Guardian, the Greif, Scientific American, Musée Magazine, PhotoVogue, and F-Stop Magazine and showcased at the Helsinki Foto Festival, a group exhibition organized by Lensculture in New York, a solo show in Cape Town, the OFF Foto Festival in Bratislava, the FotoNostrum gallery in Barcelona, and The International Photographer group exhibition in Berlin, among others.
